How do airplanes fly?

We live in a time where air travel is pretty commonplace. Big hulks of aluminium and steel cut through the skies without so much as a second thought, and though it can sometimes all go awry, airplanes maintain a better record than pretty much any alternative method of transportation.

The sleeping habits of the rich, the powerful, and the genius

Despite what science says about how crucial a good night's sleep is to your health and longevity, one thing's clear from the infographic below - some of history's most powerful and intelligent people had very little time for it.

Science has worked out why paper cuts hurt so damn much

As far as injuries go, paper cuts look pretty harmless, but there’s no denying the fact that they can feel disproportionately agonising. For starters, the fact that we’re most likely to experience paper cuts on our nerve-coated fingertips makes the potential for pain pretty high from the start. Our fingers are covered with plenty of neurons, including nociceptors, which are there to detect any potential harm, such as from harsh chemicals, high temperatures and also pressure that might break the skin, as Jabr explains.

The 100 Best, Most Interesting Blogs and Websites of 2015

Welcome to the most awesome blog post you’re going to see all year. Yep, it’s the third installment in the super-popular annual series in which I document the sites I think you’ll want to spend a lot of time on in the coming year (below you’ll find a few highlights from recent years in case you missed out). I have one major rule: a site can only appear on this list once, so there are never any duplicates. Every year this list is 100% fresh. Every list also takes on a life of it’s own. The categories change, but the grading criteria remains the same: I look at design, content and that creative “x-factor” that sets a site apart from the pack. I hope at least 95% of these sites are new to you. There are a couple that I simply couldn’t believe I hadn’t included before. You’ll know which ones when you see them. Putting together this list each year is a lot of (fun) work that literally takes many months. As I run into interesting blogs and websites I save them in an Evernote file, slowly be...

Did You Hear? Going Viral No Longer Just For Videos, Memes

The idea of a blog entry or a video going viral on the Internet is a feature of modern life — from the cute cat video to the articles about a politician's gaffe. But, much to our disappointment here at NPR, rarely does a clip of audio go viral. Recently there have been a few exceptions, though it's unclear whether that's a fluke or a new age of viral audio. About three weeks ago, the European Space Agency shared what it called the "singing comet" — sounds of a comet collected by the Rosetta spacecraft 300 million miles from Earth. Daniel Scuka of the European Space Agency says it's like listening to something "primeval." "You close your eyes, you've seen the pictures of the comet, and now you're actually hearing its telltale signature," he says. "It's like, 'Wow!' "

Energy from a single orange…

I know you cant believe it but you must.Recently one Sunday I spent the day at the kitchen table playing with oranges, copper wires and galvanized nails. My hope was that I could make this on going project work with a single piece of fruit. I tried cutting it into slices and wedges but that ever present voice in my head reminded me the SIMPLER IS BETTER.
