The power of introverts : job aspirants

This is a video about introverts based on the book "Quiet" by Susan Cain. Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. http://www.thepowerofintroverts.com

Your body language shapes who you are

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how "power posing" -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

What Makes for A Great Project Manager?

Project managers are essential players in the world of business. Companies depend on these employees to organize, motivate, facilitate, communicate, and ensure that meaningful progress is made on a daily basis. Without these individuals directing the flow of production each and every day, business would no doubt come to a standstill. However, the business that aims to not just meet, but exceed, client expectations depends on the talents of truly great project managers, and these individuals are often less common than we might like to believe. But just what defines such an individual? Optimism A project manager that is a strong asset to his or her company is one that exudes optimism. Why? When assignments and goals are presented in a way that emphasizes their achievability and benefit to the client, a project manager’s team is more likely to put fort...

What working at Facebook is like

Most of Facebook's 8,000 employees are millennials — and the average age is 28, compared to 30 at Google and 31 at Apple, the Wall Street Journal reports. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is 30. The company has embraced stereotypes about millennials (like, that they're entitled and hate negative feedback) in its management strategy. For example, the company gives employees lots of freedom and encourages them to have a strong sense of ownership over their work.  Facebook executives tell managers to focus 80% on employees' strengths when they're conducting performance reviews, and to move people to different roles based on what they're good at, not where the company actually needs more people. Plus, even low-level employees are encouraged to question and criticize their managers. "You get zero credit for your title," Don Faul, a former Facebook exec, told The Wall Street Journal's Reed Albergotti. "It's all about the quality of the work, the power of your ...

How to get a job at Facebook

Thanks to its famously easy-going culture and fabulous perks, Facebook is one of the most in-demand places to work -- and getting a job there is no easy feat. To get a better sense of what it takes to land a highly coveted position with the social media giant, we recently spoke to one employee who walked us through his interview process and shared what it's really like to work for the company. Nicolas Spiegelberg earned a Masters in Computer Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2006. After graduating with a 4.0 GPA, he worked for a telecommunications company in Alabama for a few years -- but had a serious interest in the "greatly unrealized potential of online social networking." Spiegelberg, 32, tells us he was "hooked on the idea of working for Facebook from the start."

What cloud computing means to your job

Technology has been accused of making many a job disappear, on the production line or in the accounting office. And it is not done yet. A company often resembles its communication and technology system. In the era of cloud computing that the tech industry is moving into, that seems to suggest that companies will have smaller departments, quickly analyzing data and endlessly experimenting. That means change is on the horizon at the many companies that will adopt cloud computing over the next few years. Middle managers: This is not good news for you.

Here's one type of person Amazon loves to hire

Amazon goes to great lengths to manage its workplace culture. At its Seattle headquarters, every single job candidate is interviewed by at least five employees from different departments. Every interviewer is given veto power over the candidate, in order to make sure everyone coming to Amazon fits its distinct corporate culture. But what kind of person is Amazon looking for? In a story earlier this year for The New Yorker, George Packer explains that the company seeks out a certain type of introverted, detail-oriented person who can get things done, but is not necessarily a great communicator.
