When we capture a video from our phone cameras, more often than not we
find the video rotated 90 degrees. This usually happens because even the
smartphones are not smart enough to understand the orientation.
If that has happened to you, you must have looked for ways to rotate videos in your cellphones or even laptops, but did you find it? I guess not.
In that case, here is a quick step-by-step guide for you to rotate your videos, using nothing but your very own VLC media player.
1. Open the video that you want to rotate in your VLC media player and go to Effects and Filters in Tools menu.
2. Choose the "Video Effects" tab in "Adjustments and Effects".
3. In the "Video Effects" tab, choose "Geometry".
4. Check the "Transform" box and choose "Rotate by 90 degrees". Then choose "Close".
5. Go back to "Tools" view and select "Preferences".
7. In the Interface Settings, the lower left side would show you an option called "Show All Settings"". Choose "Simple".
8. Under "Stream Output", expand the dropdown menu of "Sout stream" and choose "Transcode". In the right pane under "Video filter", check the "Video transformation filter" box. Click on "Save".
10. In the main menu, go to "Media" and select "Convert / Save".
11. Under the "File" tab, click on "Add..." to add the same video file and then choose "Convert" from "Convert / Save" button.
12. Under "convert" options, click on "Browse", and select where you want to save the video. Name the video what you want and add an extension like ".MOV" at the end.
13. In "convert" options, choose the profile output as "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)". Click the "Tools" icon.
14. In profile settings, click on the "Audio codec" tab and use the dropdown menu to choose "MP3". Click "Save".
15. Coming back to the menu, click on "Start". When the process is completed, you can play your video in any media player of your choice.
Just remember that after you rotate and save your videos, you have to reset your VLC player settings to default by going to "Preferences" in "Tools" and pressing the "Reset Preferences" button from "Preferences" window, or else, every video you play would come 90 degrees rotated, even when they are perfectly oriented.
